Last night I went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to see the newest fashion exhibit, Through the Looking Glass since I missed the MET Ball last week.
I have been to quite a few exhibits, including the Alexaner McQueen exhibit, and I think this is their best ever. The exhibit spans over two floors and is absolutely breathtaking. Seeing traditional Chinese robes and the celebration of Eastern art in Western design is really stunning. I really respected that the focus wasn't on being entirely true to a culture, but the artist an the beautiful reinterpretaion of Chinese art and fashion. There was a striking mix of traditional Chinese wear with Western designers such as Chanel, YSL and Dior.
The lower level had a bold, mirrored gallery as seen below that was reminiscent of a runway. In between the two displays were two adjacent screens that were playing video clips of different Chinese settings. The use of mirrors, screens, lighting and music really created its own little world.
Upstairs, there were several galleries, each with their own focus whether it was YSL's Opium fragrance or a room dedicated to blue and white china. My favorite room upstairs was a garden of Dior and Margiela. The floor was highly reflective and black to appear as water and reflected lights that were projected on the ceiling - I can not do it justice and you just have to see it for yourself. I went through the exhibit twice and am dying to go back again soon.
After Through the Looking Glass, I went to the temple of Dendur - my favorite place in the MET - and the European sculpture garden. I have never been to the MET before at night and the lighting changes everything - so stunningly beautiful.
So basically I had way too much fun by myself at a museum on a Saturday night. But everyone MUST go see Through the Looking Glass.
Take Care,
T
